Lovett v Woodward 2/10/09

Lovett was faced with a tough game for the season opener, away to a strong and fast Woodward team. Lovett therefore bolstered its defense and naturally attacking players like Austin Mills were confined to their
own half for much of the game. Woodward had most of the early possession and missed two clear chances to go ahead. Mavrik Dixon responded well to the pressure, making several clean catches from threatening crosses. In attack, Will Deisley's pace unsettled the opposition and he did well to get in a shot after a good run. Dan Hall also had a shot blocked for a corner and then Eddie Nam's left foot shot was saved. However it was Woodward who took the lead, their very impressive number 23 once again timing his run well onto a through-ball and placing the ball into the corner.

Meanwhile Cal Huntley on his debut showed some very good footwork and is clearly an excellent prospect at this level. Lovett also benefitted from excellent chasing back by Austin Mills while Eddie Nam continued to control the midfield for large parts of the game. It was also a testament to the speed of Harrison Dykes and Joe Bailey and the positional sense of Charlie Gober that the very dangerous Woodward attack was limited to one first half goal.

Lovett was unlucky to concede an early goal in the
second half when a shot slipped past Mavrik after the defense had failed to clear. Teddy Rodts added extra speed and muscle to the defense and nearly set up Will Deisley for a goal with a well-placed free kick. A header
from Deisley gave Dan Hall a shooting opportunity which was saved by the keeper. Thomas Patton came on as a second half substitute and showed very good speed and agility, running at the Woodward defense. Eddie Nam had another good shot saved and Cal Huntley performed well when moved into central midfield.

The Lovett defense was doing well, with Dykes particularly effective, but they could do nothing to stop the third goal, another fine run and shot from the Woodward number 23, who would give any defense a tough time. The fourth goal however was cruel with Harrison Dykes being adjudged to have fouled an attacker in the box when he had clearly won the ball
fairly. Lovett showed a very encouraging level of competitive fight throughout the game and now face Paideia on Friday.
